Fire Hydrant Flushing
The City of Griffin Fire-Rescue Department begins its comprehensive hydrant inspection and flushing program throughout the City, beginning in April and ending in June each year. The goal of this program is to ensure a high quality of drinking water, properly operating fire hydrants and valves, and to maintain the highest rating from the Insurance Services Offices (ISO) which helps to reduce homeowner’s insurance costs in our community.
How will I be affected?
Your water service will not be interrupted during flushing in your area; however, we recommend that you avoid running tap water, dishwasher or washing machines if you see crews flushing a hydrant on your street, as it may draw unwanted sediment or discolored water into your household plumbing. If you are uncertain if your water is discolored, collect a sample from an exterior spigot in a clean white container. The white background of the container will help you determine if there is any discoloration to your water.
What if my water is discolored?
If discoloration is present and crews are no longer flushing in your area, please run the water through your outside spigot for several minutes to clear your service line. If the water does not clear or becomes more discolored after flushing for several minutes, please contact the Water and Wastewater Department at 770-229-6424. Our technicians will perform extended flushing to clear the discolored water from your area.
