The Criminal Investigation Division, is led by Captain John Hayes. The division investigates crimes including Homicide, Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Burglaries, Thefts, Forgery & Fraud, juvenile offenses and any other crime against an individual or property.
Detectives are assigned cases that they manage, collect information and evidence for identifying, apprehending and convicting offenders. Each detective is trained to handle any kind of investigation. Routinely they are called out to assist patrol division on calls requiring the gathering of evidence and information and to determine if a crime has been committed warranting further investigation
F.I.T Unit
The Field Investigation Team (F.I.T.), operates under the Griffin Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, is composed of four officers/MPOs, one Sergeant, and one Lieutenant. This specialized unit focuses on concentrated patrol in high-crime areas throughout the city to combat criminal street gangs and the sale or use of illegal drugs. In addition to these core responsibilities, the F.I.T. Unit conducts surveillance operations, enforces laws related to the illegal use or sale of alcoholic beverages, and provides extra patrols within the downtown entertainment district. The team follows up on anonymous tips or complaints submitted to the police department or City Hall, leads community outreach efforts such as cookouts, educational programs, and career days, and teaches gang-recognition classes to local organizations and schools. The F.I.T. Unit also investigates and suppresses criminal street gang activity, responds to critical incidents including homicides, aggravated assaults, and drive-by shootings, and assists the Criminal Investigations Division when additional resources are needed. Additionally, the team maintains strong working relationships with outside agencies to collaborate on information sharing and coordinated operations, playing a crucial role in both crime prevention and community engagement throughout Griffin.
