Yes, state law requires Griffin obtain an audit from an independent auditing firm certified to conduct governmental audits in the state. Griffin selects an auditing firm not only qualified to conduct the audit, but one that has been reviewed by another peer accounting firm to ensure they are compentent to conduct the audit. The City's fiscal year ends on June 30th every year and the audit is a long process that usually takes the rest of the calendar year to complete. The City's audit is used by bond holders, state authorities, and engineers for multiple reasons including the calculation of utility rates charged to customers.

The City's current millage rate is 8.63 mils. Since 2000, the City has held or lowered property taxes every year. In 2005, the City implemented a homestead exemption in the amount of $10,000 to further reduce property taxes on its citizens that occupy the house they own. The net difference in millage rates for Griffin taxpayers and those outside the City in Spalding County is even less at 5.58 mils. That means a homeowner with a $100,000 home pays only about $200 more to live in Griffin with all the services it provides than it would cost to live in Spalding County outside Griffin.

Utility bills are based on consumption. Griffin prides itself in offering electric rates among the lowest in Georgia. Each year, Griffin receives a report from the Public Service Commission that shows Griffin rates lower than Central Georgia EMC, Georgia Power, and the state average (based on 2000Kwh used.) If your bill seems high, you should examine your usage and consider areas you can conserve such as repairing water leaks or adding better insulation to your home.

We are trying to offset our cost at the landfill. Every ton of recyclables we can save from going to the landfill saves the city money in disposal cost, fuel, labor, and maintenance. In addition, the recyclables will be sold to a recycling center to be reused in paper mills, carpet mills and other companies that depend on recyclables for making and marketing new products.
