Notice is given of a Workshop (public meeting) to be held by the Board of Commissioners of the City of Griffin, Georgia, on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at 9:00 a.m. in the W. Elmer George Municipal Hall, One Griffin Center, 2d Floor, 100 S. Hill St., Griffin, Georgia for the purpose of the Board of Commissioners discussing the criteria required to be followed in adopting a new election district plan for members of the Board of Commissioners (the City’s governing authority) that is population-balanced under 2020 U.S. Decennial Census data for the City of Griffin in compliance with the “one person, one vote” principle. All citizens and organizations interested in voting rights and election of local elected officials are invited to attend and comment on the criteria to be followed and public participation process.
Following this workshop, the Commission is expected to enact a Resolution governing the redistricting process at its regular meeting held September 28, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. in the same meeting location. A copy of the proposed Resolution will be available for public inspection and copying prior to the meeting on Friday, September 24, 2021 after 12:00 p.m. in the City Manager’s office.
No proposed maps of redistricting plans will be available at the Workshop or Regular meeting. Once criteria is established by Resolution, the City has engaged the professional services of FloAnalytics to provide mapping options and analysis. It is anticipated a second public meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 to consider specific options and take comments from interested citizens and organizations.
To facilitate transparency and preserve a record of the proceedings, by the second meeting, the City will open a portal on its website for comments, which will remain open through December 10, 2021. For convenience, persons interested in this process are encouraged to comment through this portal. It is anticipated the Commission will make a selection of a plan at its regular meeting on Tuesday, December 14, 2021. Written comments will also be accepted during prior to December 14 by filing with the City Manager’s office, One Griffin Center, 3d Floor, 100 S. Hill St., Griffin, Georgia.
