Griffin PD has two CID investigators assigned to Juvenile Investigations. They investigate crimes committed against children and crimes committed by children.

In many instances there was more than one arrest made on a case. Furthermore, cases are cleared continually and this list is ongoing. It is only accurate for the total count at the close of 2009. Hopefully open cases, such as those on missing persons, will be closed and ex-cleared as these youths are found and brought back to parental custody.

The juvenile investigators arrested 267 juveniles this year in addition to assisting on non-juvenile criminal investigations.

The Griffin area school system is comprised of five elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools, and one alternative school. There are three officers from the Griffin Police Department assigned to the school system as School Resource Officers. Two officers also teach the Drug Awareness Resistance Education Program (D.A.R.E.) and one Alcohol & Drug Awareness Program (A.D.A.P.) instructor for 15 to 18-year-olds. These officers try to reach the students at a young age to hopefully deter students from using or experimenting with any type of drug. This program seems to be successful because of the relationship between the students and the officers.

• During 2008, Ptl. Willie Neal and Sgt. Morris Pike taught D.A.R.E. in 11 schools to 850 students. GPD officers also had over 3000 contacts with young people through other community programs emphasizing positive relationships with those less than 18 years old.
• During 2009, Lt. Morris Pike and Cpl. Willie Neal taught D.A.R.E. in 11 schools to 800 students.
• This year Cpl. Bryan Clanton, the K9 Unit, and the Crime Scene Unit conducted programs for approximately 2000 young people under the age of 18. These programs included career days, public safety awareness, etc. with scouting organizations, church groups, and school classes.
• Cpl. Clanton taught ADAP to 396 high school students in 2009.
