Responsibilities

The general purpose of the Planning and Zoning Division is to develop, administer and enforce the City of Griffin Comprehensive Plan, Zoning Ordinance, Development Ordinance, Sign Ordinance, Telecommunications Antennae and Towers Ordinance and other development regulations.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the City Commission in developing a long range land use plan designed to serve as the foundation for specific land development decisions
  • Foster superior land development by the application of adopted City Codes
  • Coordinate the review and analysis of rezoning, special use permit request, variances, comprehensive plan amendments, site and subdivision plans, zoning text interpretation and amendments

Direct Support

This Division also provides direct support to:

  • The Planning and Zoning Board
  • The Historic Preservation Commission
It routinely makes presentations and recommendations to the City Commission and other committees and civic groups.

Building Safety

This Division ensures that State and Local Housing, and the Building and Unsafe Structure Codes and Ordinances (SBCCI, International and National Codes) through the Georgia Department of Community Affairs) are met.

  • To issues building permits
  • To sign permits, certificates of completion and occupancy
  • To respond to citizen complaints
  • To provide plan reviews for existing and new buildings and inspections of all building projects, residential and commercial
